Paolo Taviani studied liberal arts at the University ofPisa, becoming interested in the cinema after seeingRoberto Rossellini's 'Paisa'. After writing and directingshort films and plays with his brother Vittorio, he madehis first feature in 1962. The brothers have continued towork together ever since, with each directing alternatescenes with the other watching but never interfering.
